All You Need to Know About the Microsoft Outage

After a chaotic day, the worst of the Microsoft outage seems to be over, though some issues persist.

Normalcy is gradually returning for users of Microsoft 365, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams following widespread outages that disrupted services globally yesterday.

Earlier today, Microsoft announced that all affected services, except Outlook on the web, had been restored. The company continues to monitor and troubleshoot to achieve full recovery.

"We're still working on resolving lingering issues with Outlook on the web, which is impacting some users, and investigating mail queuing delays that are causing longer delivery times," Microsoft stated on X.

"Most users and core services are back online after our mitigation efforts. We're addressing the remaining issues and expect full restoration by Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 3:00 AM UTC," the company added.

The issue began around 8 a.m. ET yesterday, with thousands of technical problem reports surfacing by midday, according to the outage tracking site Downdetector.

This morning, reports have started to rise again, though they remain significantly lower than yesterday's peak.

The company attributed the outage to a recent change, which it promptly reversed to address the problem.

By midday yesterday, Microsoft reported that it had implemented a fix across approximately 70% of the affected environments and was manually restarting the remaining impacted machines.

As of now, about 98% of the affected systems have been restored, though Microsoft acknowledged that progress on targeted restarts has been slower than anticipated. The company expects to complete the recovery process today.

Users are encouraged to check Microsoft’s admin center for updates on issue MO941162, with the next update expected later today.

Currently, Microsoft is warning Outlook users that they may face difficulties accessing mailboxes via Outlook on the web, the desktop client, Representational State Transfer (REST), or Exchange ActiveSync (EAS). Mail transport delays may also occur.

Additionally, Teams users are experiencing limitations, including the inability to create or update Virtual Events such as webinars and Town Halls. Other issues include:

  • Inability to access or modify the Teams calendar, including loading it, viewing or creating meetings, and joining scheduled meetings.
  • Challenges with creating chats, adding users, and managing or editing teams and channels.
  • Problems updating presence status, using the search function, or viewing updated files and links in the Chat shared tab.

Microsoft notes that these warnings may be resolved in the next update. ITPro will provide updates as the situation evolves.
