Former Giant Barkley Hopes for "Fresh Start and Success" for Daniel Jones
Saquon Barkley expressed hope on Friday that Daniel Jones could find success elsewhere in the NFL, much like he has after leaving the New York Giants.
Jones, who was benched earlier this week in favor of Tommy DeVito, requested his release from the Giants on Friday morning. The team granted the request, with both parties agreeing it was the best decision for both sides.
Barkley also parted ways with the Giants, leaving via free agency during the offseason. He signed a three-year, $37.75 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, a move that has paid off handsomely. Barkley currently leads the NFC in rushing yards with 1,137 and has been a key contributor to the Eagles' success. At 8-2, Philadelphia sits atop the NFC East, in stark contrast to the struggling Giants, who are 2-8 and at the bottom of the division.
The departure of two high draft picks — Barkley (No. 2 in 2018) and Jones (No. 6 in 2019) — from the Giants has not gone unnoticed by Barkley.
"I’ve been in contact with him. Our friendship has stayed close throughout this process," Barkley said on Friday. "It’s tough to see how things played out for him there. I have nothing but great things to say about him. You won’t find many people with a bad word about him.
"This is the NFL. Hopefully, wherever he ends up, they’ll get a guy who works hard. Things didn’t work out for me with the Giants, and I’ve found success here. I hope he can find the same fresh start and success.”
One team that won’t be pursuing Jones is the Dallas Cowboys. Despite losing Dak Prescott to a season-ending hamstring injury, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told The Blitz with Jason & Joe that the team is confident in Cooper Rush and Trey Lance as their quarterbacks for the remainder of the season.
Jones will now go through waivers, though it's unlikely a team will claim the rest of his four-year, $160 million contract, which includes a remaining $12 million this season. If unclaimed, he is expected to sign with a new team as a free agent.
